Year 10 RAA Streetsmart

At the end of Term 3, all of our Year 10 students attended RAA Street Smart High at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre for a powerful and thought-provoking day focused on road safety

Through real stories, live demonstrations and first-hand accounts from crash survivors and emergency service workers, students were challenged to consider the consequences of the choices they make on the road.

It was an impactful experience that reinforced the importance of making safe, responsible decisions as drivers, passengers and future road users.

A big thank you to RAA and everyone involved in delivering such an important program for our students.

School Beehive Project Creates a Buzz for Sustainability and Learning

What began as an idea among a group of passionate staff members has grown into one of St Michael's College's most exciting sustainability initiatives.

The St Michael's Beehive Project commenced in 2024 when staff began exploring the possibility of introducing a beehive to the College and how it could be integrated into the curriculum to provide authentic, hands-on learning opportunities for students.

Today, the thriving hive is providing students with unique experiences that connect Science, Design and Technologies, STEM learning and sustainability education in a meaningful way. Located within a secure purpose-built enclosure, designed and constructed by the Design and Technology team, the hive and surrounding facilities continue to be maintained through the collaborative efforts of staff and members of the Eco Squad.

Students who have successfully completed a beehive safety induction have the opportunity to suit up and work alongside trained staff to inspect the hive, monitor bee activity and learn about hive health. As the colony continues to thrive, students can also participate in honey harvesting, gaining firsthand experience of sustainable food production.

Leader of Learning: Design & Technologies Coordinator Greg Cloy said, "The beehive project gives students a unique opportunity to see sustainability in action. It encourages curiosity, responsibility and a genuine appreciation for the natural world."

Special guests from the Adelaide Botanic Gardens have also visited the College, sharing their knowledge and helping students deepen their understanding of sustainable beekeeping, biodiversity and environmental stewardship.

Italian Film Festival

Our Years 8, 11 and 12 Italian students recently took their language learning beyond the classroom, attending special screenings as part of the Italian Film Festival at Palace Nova.

The experience gave students the opportunity to experience Italian language and culture in an authentic setting, while gaining an insight into contemporary Italian life and bringing their learning to life.

For our senior students, the day continued with a pizza lunch alongside students from St Aloysius College and St Mary’s College, followed by opportunities to practice their speaking skills, build confidence and strengthen their Italian.

A great day of learning, culture and connection!

Debating Champions

Congratulations to our SMC Year 9 Green Debating Team who recently won the Debating SA Year 9 Grand Final at Parliament House!

In a rematch of the 2025 Grand Final against Emmaus Christian College, where SMC narrowly finished runners-up, Ava, Giorgia and Sophia, supported by timekeeper Martina, turned the result around to claim the 2026 championship.

Arguing the negative case that "The Peanut Butter Floor should not be considered art", the team tackled a debate inspired by Pindakaasvloer ("Peanut Butter Floor"), the famous artwork created entirely from peanut butter. Their outstanding performance showcased exceptional critical thinking, teamwork and persuasive speaking.

A huge congratulations to the students, their families, and coaches Mr Soriano and Mrs Smith on this fantastic achievement.

We also congratulate all SMC debating teams and coaches on another outstanding season. Your dedication, preparation and passion for debating continue to build a strong culture of public speaking, critical thinking and respectful argument at the College.

From runners-up in 2025 to champions in 2026. What a result!

Cricket at St Michael's College

With the commencement of Summer Sport in Week 1, it was exciting to host our cricketers on the brand new cricket pitch at St Michael's College!

Our Second XI played the very first game on the pitch with a win over PAC and our First XI displayed a strong effort against a tough opponent in Westminster. We look forward to hosting more games on the pitch as Cricket continues throughout Term 4.

In addition to playing on the new oval, a group of our Senior Cricketers had the opportunity to visit to Adelaide Oval for a SACA Cricket Experience. It was an exciting opportunity for our students to train in the SACA indoor nets, tour the Adelaide Oval high-performance facilities and learn from some of their high-performance staff.
